Lyle Johnston, 74, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church, 114 13th St. SE in Altoona. Burial will follow at the Altoona Cemetery where military honors will be provided.
Lyle was born January 8, 1936 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Lillian Johnston. He spent 47 years in the insurance industry and felt very privileged to end his career with EMC Insurance in Des Moines. Lyle was a member of Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church and the Antique Automobile Club of Iowa.
Lyle was a devoted, loving husband, father and grandfather who gave of himself unconditionally. Even in his death, he provided inspiration to others by donating his corneas to help those in need.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Janet; daughters, Julie (Greg) Wilhelm, Laurie (Larry) Ohland, Theresa (Kent) Lullmann, Kris (Jason) Jones and Kari (Jeremy) Montgomery; 13 grandchildren, Kelly, Alyssa, Joel, Colton, Dalton, Carson, Brandon, Kyle, Lauren, Garrett, Nathan, Alex, and Tyler; other loving relatives and many wonderful friends.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with a vigil service to begin at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Lyle.

I was so sorry to hear about Lyle's passing. I'm sure he is
with God now and that is what you have to take comfort in.

When I came to work at EMC 6 years ago, Lyle quickly became one of my favorite people. He seemed to know and respect everyone. He has shared the family situation with me. Because I am a nurse, I helped him understand issues he was having with his cancer and well as other family members.
Now I have cancer. I was recently diagnosed and am having both radiation and chemotherapy. Lyle always listened to my concerns and shared his perspectives. I shall deeply miss him.
When I heard of his death and shared it with other coworkers, everyone's face dropped. He was truly loved.
I have been praying for you for some time. I felt compelled to pray this last weekend. I knew, then, on Monday, why that was so. I pray for your comfort and strength through all this plus the other issues you are dealing with. You will continue on my prayer list.

I started my carrier in work comp with Lyle at Crawford and Company. He was my mentor and friend. I followed him to EMC when he left Crawford. He was like a father to me. I enjoyed my time with him and will miss him dearly. My heart and prayers go out to your family.

I was honored to get to know and work with Lyle at EMC. We thought of him as the office "grandpa" or "dad". He took the time for all of us. We'll always miss having Lyle around here. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Janet and family,
Thank you for loving Lyle! He is someone I will always think of as a "gentle" gentleman. I got to know him as a co-worker here at EMC and also enjoyed working with him in other professional capacities during his long career in insurance. He was so looking forward to spending retirement with all of you.

I immediately bonded with Lyle when I met him. He was a person that made me feel like I wanted to be a part of his life. He will be missed immensely and was a person that I wish I had let him know how much I enjoyed being with him and how much I wish I could be around him. He was a great guy!!! I will miss him soooo much!!!

Lyle was a wonderful man who loved his family and friends dearly. He had the greatest sense of humor and made us all laugh daily at work. I am so very grateful that I was able to know him. He will be greatly missed.

I was privileged to work with Lyle during his time at EMC. He was a wonderful person and had such a great sense of humor. I will miss his jokes, his stories, and his good-natured teasing. I feel honored to have known Lyle, and am very sorry for your loss.

I believe that Lyle would not want us to be saddened by his dealth, but rather rejoice in his life. He was a very Special Person and will be greatly missed. I know his is one of God's Angels and is in Heaven watching over us. The fond memories of the good times we shared will remain forever in my heart.
