Joseph Arlen Campbell Sr., 72, joined his Heavenly Father in life eternal on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, January 16th at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Sunday, January 17th at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW in Altoona, with burial to follow at Franklin Township Cemetery.
Joe began his journey of life in 1937 in Des Moines. He proudly served his country in the Army and was a dedicated employee of John Deere before his retirement. Joe was a member of Justo Hijo Magic Club, along with King David and Daylight Lodge. He enjoyed putting a smile on many faces throughout his life, especially when he was “Grandpa Magic” performing magic shows for the young and old alike.
Joe is survived by his very loving and devoted wife of over 51 years, “Cindy” Rosalie; children, Joseph (Carol) Campbell Jr. of Deer River, MN, David (Shannon) Campbell of Lafayette, IN, Tammy and Kimberly Campbell, both of Bondurant; and his brothers, James and Richard, both of Des Moines. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, Andrew, Brandon, Anthony, Jeremiah, Kaitlynn, Daniel and Nikki. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Joe.

Joe was president of the Justo-Hijo Magic Club when I came back to Iowa to help my Mother deal with my Father's failing health problems and the family farm for a year. Attending regular meetings of the magic club with Joe as president proved interesting.
Joe's love of magic was obvious and he took great pride in all he had and could do. Joe sat down and taught me his color changing CD's at a pizza place in altoona one afternoon - step by step, move for move, line for line.
He was very patient with me and I could see in his eyes he enjoyed teaching young magicians as much as I do. He had a sparkle in his eye - a sparkle of mischief and amusement, and true love for this craft we call "magic".
I still do that routine to this day herein Las Vegas.
I teach that routine to other young magicians and as I do, I remember that twinkle in Joe's eye each time...
I was home to visit and do some shows in Iowa last August and I bought some of Joe's magic for my personal collection here in Las Vegas that I use to teach other young magicians. Even though I didn't get to actually talk to Joe - (I bought the magic through a mutual friend, Bill Trotter), I wanted Joe to know in his heart, that Joe's magic will be passed down from magician to magician.

My sincere condolences go out to Joe's entire family - and the magic community Joe touched so deeply in Iowa and everywhere else.

My twin sister and I send our sincere sympathy to the family of Joe Campbell. We were classmates of Joe when he went to school in Roland, IA for those few years beginning in 5th or 6th grade. We hadn't seen him for 54 years when he came back into our lives on the occasion of Scandinavian Days in Story City in the Spring of 2004 I think it was. He also attended our 5oth Class Reunion at the Legion Hall in Roland in May of 2006. It was wonderful to see him again and it was obvious to everyone that he was glad to be back. His health wasn't the best but he never complained. We will forever cherish our memories of Joe.

I was very sad to hear of Joe's passing. I loved it when he would come into Claxon's. He always had something good to tell me...a good story, or joke or just a "Hello beautiful!" even when I did not feel that way. He was a very kind man with a very kind heart and will be missed dearly by all. Heaven has truly gained a good one with Joe!
