Sharon Eckstrom
January 08, 2010
Sharon Louise (Moore) Eckstrom, 73, died Friday, January 8, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Sharon was born on April 16, 1936 in Davis City, Iowa at her grandparents’ home, to Mabel Myers and Loris Stoneburner. The family lived in Des Moines.
Sharon attended school through the ninth grade in Des Moines. Her parents divorced and in 1950 Sharon’s family moved with her mother’s new husband to Long Beach, CA. Sharon attended Poly Technical High School for her sophomore year, in 1952 she moved back to Iowa. Upon graduating from Newton High School in 1954, Sharon moved back to Des Moines and started her professional career as a Dental Assistant.
She was married in 1955 to Joe R. Moore. Three children were born of that marriage: Paula Jo, Gregory Ronald, and Derrick McKinley; she divorced in 1971. After thirteen years in private practice as a Dental Assistant she was hired in 1967 by Area XI Vocational Institute (now DMACC) to begin a Dental Assistant Education Program. Besides a full-time job at DMACC and being a single parent to three children, she found time to attend ISU and received her B.S. degree in 1980.
During her professional career in Dental Assisting and Vocational Education, Sharon was active in her professional associations serving as president of her local dental association as well as state president. In the area of Vocational Education, she also served as president for Health Occupations Region 3-American Vocational Association and as the Iowa representative and president of AVA-National Health Occupations.
In 1983 she was remarried to Robert Eckstrom and moved with her youngest son, Derrick, to Hudson, IA. She continued to commute to DMACC until March 1986. Wanting to spend more time with the family and to be there for Derrick and stepson, Kurt Eckstrom as they finished their senior years of high school, she left DMACC and began a new career as a Community Educator and Area Manager for Planned Parenthood of Cedar Falls. Sharon used her educational background and management skills to start a new Planned Parenthood Clinic. From 1986-1995 she continued in other management roles for Planned Parenthood.
Bob and Sharon decided to retire in 1995 and moved from Cedar Falls to Rogers, AR for another new venture in their lives. In 1998, due to health problems that Bob was having, they moved back to Ankeny, IA. Not able to sit still for long, Sharon went back to Planned Parenthood for an interim role as Vice President of Education. Bob, the love of her life, was re-diagnosed with lung cancer in 2000 and following another round of chemotherapy and radiation passed away in March of 2001.
After Bob’s death, wanting to stay active Sharon volunteered her time to help the Planned Parenthood Book Sale, DMACC Pioneers, Ankeny First Methodist Church and the Home Owners association where she lived.
Sharon was re-diagnosed with Breast Cancer that had metastasized to her bones in 2005 and lost a long courageous fight with the disease.
Sharon is survived by her four children, Paula Moore (Scott Horne), Gregory Moore (Janette), Derrick Moore (Kim), Kurt Eckstrom (Jennifer); grandson, John Franklin Adams; sisters, Gretchen (Jack Chase), Kaye Stevens; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Saturday January 16, 2010 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Burial or cremated remains will take place in Marion, Kansas at a later date. A visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 am – 10:00am at Hamilton’s.

Deepest condolences to your family. Mrs Eckstrom was a tough instructor, but didn't realize what a blessing she was to me until I was in the working world. She prepared me in ways that I would have never imagined. I am thankful for the wonderful education she provided me. Prayers to you all.

Was so sorry to read of your mother's passing. I had lost touch with her. She was my instructor at DMACC. I also enjoyed her friendship for many years after graduation. She was a wonderful woman and forever changed my life. I still work in the dental field because of her influence.

To Sharon's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Sharon was a very good friend to some of my very good friends who worked at DMACC. I was always glad to see her when we got together as a group and since I worked as an Optician, was delighted when she came in and I was able to help her pick out her glasses.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. What a considerate, sweet person she was who never stopped doing things for others.
My condoleces.

I'm thinking of your family today, with sadness in my heart at Sharon's passing but happy memories of working with her at Planned Parenthood. I remember her as someone who was always smiling, and who was always ready to do her best to help the people we served. I'm so glad to have known her.

Dear Paula, Greg, Derrick and Kurt (and families)
I was so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was a dear friend
and I have so many fond memories of the good times, as well as some
sad ones, that we shared. Although I cannot be there for the service,
please know that you all are in my heart and prayers. I know God will
provide you the strength and guidance as you make this transition.
You mom will be missed by so many who loved her dearly. God Bless

I worked with Sharon through the Book Sale.
In fact, it was Sharon that called me and asked me to consider a spot on the Book Sale committee. That was 10 years ago...After initially telling her no thank you, she encouraged me to think about it more and not make my decision right now. Within a coule weeks, I had called her back telling her I wanted to change my mind.
She never pressured me, it was just her quiet confidence that I would enjoy being a part of the sale in a different way than what I had been previously. I still do a little with the sale although not on the committee as I was previously, but I will always remember Sharon calling me and getting me started.
I have so many wonderful memories of Sharon; always a smile on her face and encouraging words for others no matter what was going on with her.
She will be missed greatly; there is a void in my heart tonight.
God's peace to Sharon's family and close friends; we have ALL lost a friend!!

We were all overwelmed, homesick college students when we first met Mrs. Eckstrom. She taught us not only dental assisting, but independence and respectability. She expected all that we were capable of and she taught to be outstanding professionals. Some are still assisting, some have moved onto other careers...all are grateful to have known Sharon Moore Eckstrom.

My condolences to the family at your time of loss.
I will always remember Sharon fondly as she was responsible for hiring me as a young woman, right out of college, to work for Planned Parenthood... in June of 1990.
I will always be grateful to her for mentoring me and assisting me to develop the skills, the passion and the work ethic that have helped me to continue to succeed in this field almost 20 years later.
Sharon always had a kind word and the kind of no nonsense advice that I knew I could trust. I always knew she cared...
My prayers to her family, she will be missed.
