Service Details

Donald L Brown, Sr. was born on October 29, 1926, to Mabel and Fred Brown. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945 and served as class president. Don was a Army Veteran and worked as an engineer for Rock Island Railroad until his retirement in 1980. He then became the owner of the Brown Jug Restaurant and Bar until 1984. Don was the epitome of a hard worker and continued to work part-time at LaPizza House and ABC School of Learning until 2004.

Don’s love of sports began in high school and carried through his entire life. He was an avid softball player and was inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame during the 1970’s. Don coached his children and grandchildren both on and off the field and the number of trophies in the Brown household is a testament of his success. You could always find Don at South Des Moines Little League, the Little All American Football fields, the YMCA for basketball or the softball fields watching his grandchildren. Don was competitive in his golden years and enjoyed fishing, betting on the horses, and playing pitch by his rules which could change depending on the score.

He is survived by his sons Don Brown Jr. (Nancy), Mark Brown (Shelly) and daughter Michelle Olson (Kevin), his brother Larry (Billy) of Fort Meyers, Florida and close friend Bev Hiatt. Don leaves behind nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren who have all benefited from his love, caring personality and coaching skills.

Don is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Beverly A Brown, his son Craig, his brothers Fred, Bob, Jerry and his parents.

Visitation will take place at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home (5400 SW 9th Street) from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, January 5th, 2010. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
