Dorothy (Helm) Bensley, 77, was born on March 10, 1932 in Des Moines, the daughter of Florence and Shell Helm. She passed away Sunday, December 20, 2009 at her home in Bondurant surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Ernie (Cindi) Bensley; daughters, Debbie Bensley and Cara (Steve) Laffey; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five brothers; five sisters; many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her infant son; her loving husband of 23 years, Warren Bensley in 1980; her parents; one sister; one brother and her daughter-in-law, Melody Bensley.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or Iowa Home Health Hospice in loving memory of Dorothy.

Dorothy was a great neighbor and we'll miss her.
When the girls were small, Dorothy occasionally babysat for us. After that, the neighborhood children loved to go "visit" with her. She always had some craft project for them to do.
Before my grandmother died, she made a quilt top from scraps of all of our family's clothes. She didn't finish the quilt, so Dorothy finished it for me. It is one of my treasured possessions.
Dorothy was blessed by all of you who came to her house for Sunday dinners. She was well loved and cared for, and we share in your sorrow.
