Donald “Donnie” Smith, 74, passed away at his home December 7, 2009. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 11, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Donald was born March 25, 1935 to Jerrel and Iona Smith in Oskaloosa. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School and served as a paratrooper in the US Army. Donald retired from the US Postal Service and then opened J&B Tap which he owned and operated for thirty years. After the bar closed, he worked as a grounds keeper for Jester Park Golf Course and then for Bob’s Septic.
Donald was a past Potentate of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and a member of many units and clubs of the Shrine. He was also a member of the East Gate Masonic Lodge #630, the Des Moines Scottish Rite, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, AmVets, and the HAPAC.
Donald is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dixie Smith; daughters, Brenda Smith, Candy (Dan) Halterman, Pam (Bud) Reynolds, Teresa (Jim) Wilber, Jackie (Wilbur) Bitting, and Lourie Light; son, Deno (Sunday) Robinson; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; two brother-in-laws; four sister-in-laws; mother-in-law, Lillian Beener; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanne Chance; father-in-law, Freel Beener; and brother-in-law, Danny Perry.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Childrens Hospital or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Dixie,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Donnie was a very old and dear friend of mine. He will be missed by a lot of people. I will always remember the happier times at J&B and all the get togethers with his family.

Dixie and the Family, Don will be deeply missed. He always had a way about him that no one can copy. Good man to work for and with. Sorry that we will not be able to attend the service, but please our hearts are with you all.

Helloe Dixie: Very sorry to hear Donnie passed on. He did very well from such a humble start.
He and I were friends in Douglas Acres back in the 40's Have a picture of he and I if you would like me to send it.
