Service Details

Dorothy Walker 82, passed away December 6, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. Memorial services will be 11 AM Friday, December 11, 2009, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, with visitation beginning one hour prior to services. Her body has been cremated and a private burial service will occur at a later date.

Dorothy was born March 31, 1927, to Howard and Bertha Denman in Minburn, Iowa. She attended school in Minburn and received many academic and basketball awards which helped her receive a scholarship to play basketball at AIB. She left before graduating to join the Air Force and was assigned to Wright Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. After the Air Force, she returned to AIB and graduated taking a job with Meredith Corp where she played basketball for the company and retired in 1989 after 37 years. While employed at Meredith, Dorothy met her husband, Richard and together they raised two boys on the southside of Des Moines.

Dorothy had many interests in life, but her family came first and foremost. She enjoyed, reading, traveling, music and of course sports.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard; sons, Dennis and Douglas (Michelle) Walker; grandchildren, Adam and Stephanie; sisters, Carol Randall, Phyllis Dumstorff and Diana Bristol; brother, Harold Denman, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step mother, Elsie; sisters, Helen Denman and Gladys Morrison.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church or Iowa Health Hospice.
