Torwood “Toby” Thompson, 73, joined the Lord on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with interment at Avon Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Toby was born April 8, 1936, to James and Lucille Reynolds Thompson in Richland, Iowa. He served in the US Air Force from 1954 to 1958. After his tour of duty, he worked in the bread business and retired from Colonial Baking Company in 1991 after 33 years of service.
Toby is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Ten Hagen Thompson; sons, Merle (Teresa), Wes (Alesia), and Bryce Thompson; 17 grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Deaver of Rocherster, MN and Karen Mc Adoo of Oskaloosa; sister and brother-in-law, Dwight and Georgia Roorda of Pleasant Hill; and many other dear friends and family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Judy Ryken, Shirley Petersma, Velda Visser, Coetta Jean, and Ronald Dean Thompson.

Dear Aunt Mary, Merle, Wes, Bryce, and family,
We wanted to let you all know we are thinking of you! We want to be there so much, but it looks like the weather is going to keep us trapped in Minnesota.
Uncle Toby was such a special person to us and he will be GREATLY missed!

Aunt Mary And Boys, Uncle Toby will be so missed by so many people. He was such a wonderful and kind man. Our thoughts are with you and wish we could be there. We love you, Karen, Jeff, Seth and Miles Stuve

So sorry to hear of your loss, may god be with you and the family at this difficult time. I always made a special effort to get to the Thompson Reunion, just so I could see Tobie and Mary. He will be truly missed.
