Joann Renda
December 05, 2009
Joann Renda, 78, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, December 5, 2009, after a two year courageous battle with lung cancer. A funeral mass will be at 11 am Thursday December 10th, 2009, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with a visitation from 4-8 pm on Tuesday December 8, 2009, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service with a private burial at a later date.
Joann was born February 24, 1931, in Des Moines to Lela and Forrest Malloy. She graduated from Lincoln High School and married Thomas R. Renda on December 30, 1949. Tom and Joann had five children and all were raised on the southside of Des Moines.
Joann had a big heart, great sense of humor; she was a great cook and had an enormous love and dedication to her family. She always put family and friends first and was selfless in every way. She was the type of person who always found good in everyone and generously gave praise. Her love of spending time with family is what she treasured the most. She was always a big supporter of her children and grandchildren’s activities and was a friend to everyone she came into contact with; she never met a stranger.
For many years Joann and her husband Tom owned and operated the Dairy Queen on SW 9th Street, as well as owned and managed several apartment complexes in the area. Joann and Tom loved traveling extensively in their motor home. Where ever it was sunny and warm, you could find Joann people watching, playing slot machines at the local casino and meeting new people who many times became life long friends.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas R. Renda; children; Vicki (Dave) Scott of Des Moines, Sheri Amodeo of Des Moines, Frank (Larree) Renda of Hillsborough California, Tom (Carol) Renda of Des Moines, John Renda of West Des Moines. 7 grandchildren: Jennifer Amodeo of Des Moines, Nick Amodeo of Denver Colorado, Tommy Renda, Kristina Renda, Tony Renda all of Hillsborough California, Alexis Scott of Des Moines and Peter Renda of Des Moines.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Cox and Betty Pickett.

I can't begin to tell you how badly my heart aches for my very "bestest" Aunt and for all of you. My happy thoughts are all so special and fun of all the wonderful family times we always had together. Those years have long been over, but these kinds of memories live on forever in my heart. I treasure all those times. Remember Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma and Grandpa Malloy's.....I can still see us all crowded around the table and the food was overwhelming and delicious. How about when the Easter Bunny left baskets for us all at Grandma and Grandpa's. Family reunions at Winterset and picnic's at the park were all fun fun times. And Christmas......oh my gosh, what wonderful times we all had. I am thankful for the family happiness we all shared.
Much love and many hugs to each of you. Tommy, thank you for being my Special Uncle! You have always been the greatest and you can "tickle my funny bone" until it aches. :-)
Love,
Susy

Vicki and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. We know how
close you were to your mom, and how you took such good care of her toward
the end. She was a wonderful lady, and we all knew how much she loved to
watch Alexis at the horse shows, and be involved in her family's life.
We will do our best to honor her at the funeral tomorrow and pay our
respects to her great life. Weather permitting, we will see you tomorrow.
Sincerely with love,
Lori, Paige and Lindsey Ross

Dear Renda Family,
I'm so sorry and saddened to hear of JoAnn's passing. John, your mom was always so kind to me and always made me feel welcomed in her home. I hope you find comfort in the fact that since you all are such a close-knit family, you will be able to lean on each other as you grieve. I'll send prayers your way.
Sincerely,

Sherri, I am so sorry to read that you have lost your mamma. She truly was a beautiful lady, inside and out. I can remember when we were kids, how we'd gather at your house, and all the walks to the DQ. What helps get me through my loss of both my parents, is all the good memories they left behind. Some people are not as fortunate as we are to have such great parents. Give my sympathy to Vicki. You will be in my prayers at this really tough time.

Tom and family,
I was very sorry to see that Joann passed away. I can still remember going to Caulder Avenue to see the aunts and uncles and walking to the Dairy Queen with the cousins for ice cream.
I lost my mother, Doris Randa Reese, almost 2 years ago and those first holidays without her sad.
You and your family will be my thoughts and prayers especially during this holiday season.
