Richard Warren Lowder, 85, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009.

He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on March 5, 1924 to Bert and Eleanor Lowder. He spent his childhood in Sioux City and graduated from Trinity High School. Dick graduated from Creighton College of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska in 1954. He returned to Sioux City, Iowa where he practiced Dentistry for 38 years. He was a past President of the Sioux City Dental Society and a life long member of the Iowa Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He moved from Sioux City to West Des Moines, Iowa in 1992.

Other than his God, family and friends, his first love was any sports activity. He was a passionate fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team and Notre Dame football. He loved playing basketball and softball during his younger years and later loved watching and coaching his son and his grandchildren in little league ball, basketball, soccer, golf, swimming and any other sport that they chose to play.

Dick enlisted in the Navy in World War II and served in the South Pacific as a Medic. He was proud of being present at Iwo Jima when the flag was raised. He was also present at the surrender of Japan. After 3 and ½ years in the navy, he returned to Sioux City, Iowa and continued his college career at Creighton University.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean; his children, Michael and his wife Kay, Mary Lowder Knight and her husband Bruce Knight, Suzi Lowder Kottemann and her husband Karl Kottemann; his grandchildren, J.R. Knight and his wife Leann, Libby Knight, Matt and Ryan Lowder and Kara and Kristin Kottemann. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jerry and sisters Alice and Virginia.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. The family will greet friends on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.
