Gabriel James Martin, 16, passed away on August 12, 2023 in Ankeny. He was born in Des Moines to John and Nicole Martin on March 20, 2007.
Gabe was getting ready to start his junior year at Saydel High School. He was a larger than life teddy bear who was extremely fun and loving. Gabe never met a stranger or an enemy. He was a kid at heart and will always be remembered for his playful spirit and loving soul. Gabe would light up a room when he walked in, you couldn’t help but be drawn to his big grin and belly laughs. He will be greatly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.
Gabe is survived by his parents, Nicole and John; siblings, Richie, Lexi, Lilly and Noah; grandparents, Paula Greene and James (Shelli) Greene; great grandma, Anna Greene; aunt and uncle, Crystal Martin and Nathan Greene, along with a host of loving relatives and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandpa Steve, grandma Sara and Uncle Mikey Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 5:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Family will greet guests prior to services from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Gabe.

Played video games with him through out my child hood. He saved me multiple times and I wish I could talk to him one last time. Hate I found out this way. Literally a brother to me. Fly high bro love you always.

I knew Gabe from middle school into high school and he was always making everyone laugh. His happy soul was taken to soon from our lives! I send my prayers to everyone in his family and to all of his friends!

I didn't know him very well, but it kinda hit me when I did hear about this happening. I knew him in freshman year and he seemed like a cool guy to be around. To the parents, I am so sorry this has happened to you. Losing a loved one is never easy. Remember to take time to heal and make time for yourself. I know he had impacted a couple of my friends' lives greatly and his loss hurt them. May he rest easy.

My son Elliott is a friend of Gabe's and loosing him hit really hard and close to home. I pray that God provides you, your family and all of Gabe's friends with the peace that surpasses all understanding, the peace he promises in the bible verse Philippians 4:7 . We live in a fallen world and Satan continues to show his ugly face but I pray that through this horrible loss you put your faith and trust in our creator and he helps you to keep the amazing memories of your beautiful son alive until that grand day when you can embrace him forever. Things like this are unexplainable and we just have to trust that God's plan is bigger than ours and that he needed Gabe more than we did. Hugs and prayers to you all.

Nicole and John,
There are absolutely no words or long enough hugs in the grief of losing a child. I cant even begin to imagine what it must be like so i cant even find the words to tell you how sorry Rhonda and I are. What I do remember in meeting Gabe a couple of times was his BIG ferocious smile and his neon colored hair. God blessed you with a beautiful boy and for some reason in which we will never know until we get there he needed him more. Please know you are in our constant thoughts and prayers and please reach out to us if there is anything we can do during this difficult time. We love you.

This happened way too soon. I can never thank you enough for being so real to me. The bond we shared together was unlike any other. You made such an impact in the very few years we spent. Our late night conversations, helping me big-time in being more social, helping me reattach friendships with people I missed greatly. These things happened because of you, Gabriel. Im truly sorry I am unable to attend today. My love goes to you, your family and everyone else affected.

Gabe was a friend of mine from his previous high school. Our friendship ended sourly, but I will never forget the impact his friendship had and continues to have on me. He was a good guy and I want to apologize for anything I did to hurt him. I have wanted to apologize for a while, but now he will never know. Sending thoughts and prayers
