Marian Kay Lyddon
February 14, 1941 — August 10, 2023
Marian Kay Borngesser Lyddon, 82, passed away August 10, 2023, at the Walnut Ridge Senior Living Community in Clive, Iowa. She was born to Frederick “Bill” and Blanche Borngesser in Orrick, MO. Following time in Chickasaw, OK, the family settled in St. Joseph, MO. Marian graduated from St. Joseph Central High School and Northwest Missouri State University. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. At NWMSU, she met Ivan Lyddon of Stuart, IA and they began their life together. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December 2022.
Marian’s careers as a teacher, accountant, and entrepreneur and business owner were meaningful; her focus was her family. Her joy came from having her children, grandchildren and friends gathered around a table for a meal or a game of cards. While incredibly good natured in all things, her competitive streak was strong when it came to cards (bridge or rummy were her favorites). Not even her grandchildren could divert her from her goal of winning. She was an avid gardener, had exquisite fashion sense, and created beautiful spaces, at times merely with her smile.
Marian was always committed to progressive causes. She gave her time, talent, and resources to NARAL, Interfaith Alliance, the Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood, New Directions Shelter/Hawthorn Hill (now Families Forward), PEO Chapter XS, and Walnut Hills United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan Lyddon; her daughters, Lana Lyddon Hatten (Ted) of Indianola, IA, Laura Linn (Jos) of Kansas City, MO, and Lisa Lyddon (Derek Welles) of Prairie Village, KS; as well as her grandchildren Jonah (Oli Peters), Asa and Sam Lyddon Hatten, Stella Linn, and Parker Seltman. Marian was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard Borngesser.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, from 5:00 -7:00 pm at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, 12321 Hickman Road in Urbandale, IA. A celebration of her life memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 10:00 am also at the church where a reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, Iowa Caregivers Association, Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, or a women’s cause of your choice.

Mr. Lyddon, i send my sincere condolences on the passing of your wife. Although i did not have the pleasure of knowing her, reading her obituary portrays a accomplished lady with a tremendous positive impact on your family and our world. Her obituary also rekindled my memories of you and the impact you had on a bunch of ornery sophomore high school students at Benton High school during the 1962-63 academic year. You were our English teacher. I believe it was very early in your teaching career. Facing that group of rowdies each day was not easy. You had a great impact on us. I have very fond memories of your class. You taught us a lot in spite of our adolescent obstinacy. We thank you and send our best wishes to you and your family.

Dear Ivan, I am so sad to learn of Marian's death. I have happy memories of her during the years when our paths would regularly cross at Unity Point events and activities. I know the journey has been long and I hope you find peace through your special memories and being surrounded by your beautiful daughters and their families. Sending you hugs.

Ivan:
Irene told me this morning of Marian's death and I'm very sorry. I know how sad it is to lose a spouse after 63 years of marriage. The grief lingers but you know where she is and that she has a whole new body . . . and, you will see her again. The old hymn "When We All Get to Heaven" often comes to my mind . . . "what a day of rejoicing that will be; when we all see Jesus we'll sing and shout the victory." I will be praying for you and your family.
Sincerely,
Martha
