Jan E. Mickelson
July 29, 2023
Jan Earl Mickelson went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2023, after an extended battle with complications following a stroke in 2015.
Jan was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on June 21, 1949, to Omar and Evonelle Mickelson. His high school years were spent in church in Harlan singing in a quartet, providing a base for Jan's Christian faith. Jan met his wife, Suzy, at Bible College.
For nearly 30 years, Jan hosted Mickelson In The Morning on AM 1040 WHO Radio. He broadcast world events, interviewed presidents, politicians, authors, and entertained his listeners with insightful discussions, his quick wit, an unbridled sense of humor, and an unwavering faith in Christ.
Jan loved coaching soccer, instructing spin class at the YMCA, and riding RAGBRAI. Grace Church became his home church.
Jan is survived by his wife, Susanne; son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Jillaina; grandson, Alexander; granddaughter, Evonelle Mickelson; sister, Sonja (Don) Bates of Highland, California; brother, Philip (Sally) Mickelson of Charlottsville, Virginia; niece, Kristen (Josh) Bowlin of Highland, California; nephew, Jacob Bates of San Diego, California; grandniece, Vivey Bowlin and grandnephews, Ezekiel Bowlin and Elijah Bowlin, all of Highland, California; sister-in-law, Ronda Kruger (Larry Draves) of Clarion, Iowa; niece, Wendy Kruger of Des Moines, Iowa; niece, Rachel (Chris) Montag and grandnephews Brantley Montag, Bodey Montag, and Koen Montag, all of West Bend, Iowa.
Preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Myrl Kruger.
Funeral services will be held at Grace Church, 4200 East 25th Street in Des Moines, Friday, August 11 at 11:00 a.m. and will also be livestreamed. The family will receive visitors at the church on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

RIP Jan. I used to listen to him in the morning for years and years. I'm pretty sure I became more conservative listening to his wise analysis of our daily lives, culture and possible future ramifications. I really am so saddened to hear of Mr. Mikelson's passing.

Jan Mickelson was a best friend through high school in Harlan, Iowa. I recall our first quartet song "It's Not an Easy Road". We hung out regularly and enjoyed the MGA he drove. Jan knew how to be a friend without sharing political views. His humor always came through. You are missed.

When I moved here from New Jersey in 2010, I didnt think Iowa Talk Radio would compare to the New York style talk radio I enjoyed until hearing Jan Mickelson. I was pleasantly surprised. As a hard core listener and caller, I had the pleasure of some great conversations with him. Jan had an amazing grasp of the issues, great insights and humor. My condolences to Jans wife Suzy and family.

All of our thoughts and prayers are with Susanne and the Mickelson family. I only knew Jan a short time but learned much from him, and continue to be amazed by the incredible bond that he forged with WHO Radio listeners.

I looked forward to Jan's daily program for many, many years. He opened my mind to so much with his wonderful sense of humor, such interesting guests (some politicians, some deep thinkers and some just fun, like Psychic Suzy!). It was so sad what his stroke did to him. I'll always remember him very fondly and with a big smile on my face!!
My sincere condolences to his family that he always spoke of so lovingly. Jan is greatly missed.

As one who leans more towards the liberal side of issues I was sadden when Jan had his stroke as I loved listening to his very sensible points of view. What a loss to central Iowa radio when Jan went off the air.kept up with 1040 looking forward to his return. Was obvious the damage the the stoke caused but was also obvious his views were very much in tact.what a loss to you his family and his numerous followers on WHO radio. He will indeed be missed but never forgotten.

Moving to Ankeny in 1986 from Tulsa, OK, where I had learned to appreciate talk radio, I convinced my brother that WHO was the station to be played in out newly open jewelry store. Most customers agreed, but a few wondered why on earth we would listen to that conservative talk. We loved listening to Jan from his first day on. Thanks for the memories! Love, hugs, and prayers!
