Dolores “Dee” Anne Shawhan, 93, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Edencrest at Green Meadows in Johnston, Iowa. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 17, 1929 to Edna Ericksen and Roy Witmer and was a lifelong resident of Johnston. Dee graduated from North High School in 1947 and began working at Western Mutual in the claims department until 1950 when she became a homemaker.
She enjoyed gardening and flowers, and loved being outdoors, especially at her acreage. Dee was an animal lover except for snakes, they were not her favorite thing. She could often be found walking around the pond feeding the geese. She will be remembered for her homemade “mother love jam.” While all of this was special to Dee, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy.
Left to cherish Dee’s memory are her daughters, LeaAnne Pedersen Falke (Ron) and Sonja Pedersen Christofferson (Jon); 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Jerry Witmer (Joyce), Linda Mentzer (Bob), and Adele Haag (Don); along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her son, William Ira Pedersen, Jr.; and daughters, Kimberly Shawhan and Rebecca Shawhan Hastings.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa.

Rest in peace to this amazing woman that I was so lucky to get to call my grandma! Words can not say how special you are. She always told us how much she loved us & always encouraged us to be our best. We have so many memories of sleepovers & the best christmases! You always taught us how to make the best easy foods. You had great recipes. We would always go for walks around the pond, feed the geese & just talking about everything. We all shared a love for animals & I always loved how much you enjoyed your dogs. Seeing all your flowers & having you show them off was so special. The peonies, lilacs, roses & irises will always make me think of you. You always taught us to dream big & live happy full lives. Enjoy all our hobbies & I know we enjoyed talking about them equally as much with you. We were so lucky we got to work close & see you every week for many years. I loved all the stories you would tell us about your family when you grew up. Most of all I will miss my daily visits we had this past year & telling you how much I love you. Till we meet again I know you will be watching over us from heaven. God Bless You!
Love always Sara
