Homer Smothers, 81, passed away at his home on July 18, 2023.

Homer was born September 25, 1941, in Rockwell, Iowa to Emery and Lucille (Fraser) Smothers. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Homer was a concrete worker throughout his career and treasured the lifelong friendships made with his buddies from Local #177. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and his western movies. Homer loved trips to the casino and spending time with his family and friends. His captivating storytelling will be missed as well as his (inappropriate!) jokes.

Homer is survived by his children, Angela (Jason) Roefer and Dustin Smothers; grandchildren, Chantell Shores, Anthony Ennenga, Caleb Roefer, Lucas Roefer, Conor Smothers, Dillon Wicker, Jayden Smothers-Wade, Madison Smothers-Wade, and Jersey Brummond; great-grandchildren, Chailynn Shores, Chole Shores-Irvin, Chase Shores-Irvin, Chandler Shores-Irvin, Cheyenne Shores-Irvin, Chazmin Shores-Irvin, and Christian Shores-Irvin; brother, Bobby Smothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Wade Smothers, daughter Renee Berry, grandson Jesse Wicker, parents Emery and Lucille (Fraser) Smothers, and his siblings Leo, Gerald, Edmund, Donald, Eugene, Kenneth, and Mary.

The family will greet friends Friday, July 28, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 12 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Homer will be laid to rest with military honors at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the family invites you to join them virtually through the link below.
