Jack Douglas Bailey was born on March 19th, 1931, as the sixth child of thirteen children to parents Lloyd and Hazel Bailey. Jack farmed his whole life and was born and died on the family farm. Jack played on a successful fastpitch softball team (The Yellowhammers) in the 1950s and 60s, and loved hunting, fishing, trapping and camping. Jack married Leona Mae Carpenter on January 20, 1951, and raised seven children on the family farm. Jack and Leona attended Bluegrass music festivals, traveled to Europe, Australia and New Zealand as well as several cruises. Jack served on the Polk County 38-ditch Board of Trustees while performing his farming responsibilities. Jack was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.

Jack is survived by his wife Leona; and children Chris (Judy), Brad (Nancy), Kathy (John), Scott (Patricia), Becky (Mark) and Blaine; siblings Garnett (Lester), Ramona, Kathern (Dick), and Clifford; 20 grandkids; 46 great grandkids; and 16 great-great-grandkids.

Jack was preceded in death by a son David; daughter-in-law Debbie (Blaine); his parents Lloyd and Hazel; siblings June, Junior, Chester, Harold, Kenneth, Guy, Gaynard and Roger.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 24, 2023, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Santiago United Methodist Church, 8190 NE 109th St., Mitchellville. Jack will be laid to rest in the Franklin Township Cemetery.
