Patti Sue Evans
July 13, 2023
Patti Evans, age 67, of Altoona, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Methodist Hospital. She was born on January 19, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa to Edwin “Gene” and Shirley (Holland) Butler. Patti was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area, graduating from Saydel High School in 1974. She married Rex Evans on October 10, 1975, and they shared a life of 47 years together. After only being apart for some short weeks, they met again to be together forever in Heaven with their Lord.
Patti was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and enjoyed being active in their children’s ministries as well as attending many activities with the ladies of the church. She was the most devoted of Grandmothers, always attending her grandchildren’s many activities over the years. “Grandma Kitty”, as they lovingly called her, would immediately drop everything to answer their requests for rides, treats, or simply spend time with her. They will always know she loved them unconditionally, because of her unwavering presence in their lives. Over the years, she loved to reach out by sending encouraging notes to people to lift their spirits, let them know they were valued, and be a blessing.
After working at Broadlawns Hospital and Tone’s Spices, she made the decision to be home full time to raise their daughters. In the following years, she held several other professional positions: one with the receiving department of Pace Membership Warehouse, the next with Principal Healthcare, and eventually settled into her vocation with Des Moines Public Schools at Ruby Van Meter as a paraeducator for many years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughters, Shawn Evans and Shannon (Dan) Waskel; grandchildren, Caleb, Cayla, and Evan; her sister, Carol Brewer; and a host of other loving family and friends.
Patti was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rex Evans; parents, Gene and Shirley Butler; infant son, Jeremy Evans; and her sisters, Shirlee Butler and Kristie Campbell.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023, at First Baptist Church, 3020 E 38th Street, Des Moines, IA.. Burial will follow at Altoona Cemetery. A recording of the service may be viewed through this LINK courtesy of First Baptist Church.

Patti was a caring and kind person who helped many special needs students at Ruby Van Meter School. She dedicated herself to helping them develop to their fullest potential.
Her passing has filled our hearts with sadness. Later, we will joyfully celebrate her life for she was an important part of ours.
