Darrell Gene Ferguson, age 91, passed away Monday, July 10, 2023, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk, Iowa.

Darrell was born November 25, 1931, in Barnes City, Iowa to Ernest D. and Ida M. (Ketels) Ferguson. He married Marlene Mae Braden September 28, 1951. They had two children, Candace and Kyle. They were residents of the Des Moines area since 1955. Darrell served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He was proud of his service and was thrilled to be asked to go on one of the many Honor Flights to Washington, DC. When he returned, he attended AIB and became an accountant. Eventually, he and Marlene owned a Dairy Queen in West Des Moines for several years. After selling it, he was then employed by Dewey Ford in the sales department, retiring in 1996.

Darrell and Marlene were members of the First Federated Church for many years. He enjoyed teaching Kindergarten Sunday school while his grandchildren were young, then Darrell was a faithful usher for many years. They were both very active with their Sunday School class. Darrell enjoyed watching baseball, football, and basketball. He was always rooting for the Hawkeyes and Yankees. He loved cars. He owned many vehicles over his years. He also sold many vehicles from his driveway. He watched NASCAR on Sundays and was most happy when a Ford driver got the checkered flag.

He is survived by his son, Kyle Ferguson (Deidre); and son-in-law, Thomas Davey; grandchildren, Jesse Ferguson, Joy Davey, Linze Ferguson and Jill Davey and his great-daughters, Brynlee, Stella, and Layla.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Ferguson; daughter, Candace Davey, his brother, Jerry Ferguson, his father and mother and mother and father in law.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Barnes City Cemetery, Barnes City, Iowa after the service.
