Charlotte R. Herrmann
July 04, 2023
Charlotte R. Herrmann (John, and formerly Tew), 91, of West Des Moines, Iowa, left this world on July 4, 2023 in a blaze of glory, illuminating light along with the fireflies, fireworks and a supermoon.
She will be remembered as a stylish wonder woman. Truly a forerunner of her day. Charlotte was a pillar in her community, spending many decades of her life working with international student exchange programs, the foreign food fair, local and state political campaigns, specifically Governor Robert D. Ray.
The highlight of her career was her nearly 30 years as Chief Administrative Deputy, working side by side with Sheriff Bob E. Rice of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
She was an amazing human being. A loving and loyal daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Charlotte was a positive light and influence to everyone fortunate enough to know her spirit, brilliance, kindness, humor, love and support and her zest for life.
Charlotte is survived by her loving children, Bradley A. Tew, Tamara (Jody) Krimstock, Christine A. Curry (Curtis Cokeley), and her adopted in love daughter, Abbie (DJ) Smith and their son Tyler (Niny) Smith; sisters, Rosemary Schwab, Pat (Jim) Bullard; and her many wonderful and adoring nieces, nephew and dear friends.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her loving parents, William and Helen John, and her sister Wilma Noah and brother-in-law Jerry Noah.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with the funeral service following the next day at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Animal Rescue League or West Des Moines Library-Friends Foundation in loving memory of Charlotte.

Charlotte"s Family--Sorry this message is so late, but I've been out of State and just learned of Charlotte's passing. Charlotte was such a wonderful lady, and will be missed by all her knew her. I first met Charlotte when she was married to Don Tew. My family was involved in the asphalt road construction business at the time. I also later worked in the County Attorney's Office while Charlotte worked for the Sheriff. We had many great times together. My thoughts and prayers are with you all...Jim Smith

My beautiful Momma Char - I love you so much and loved all the years I got to share my life with you, Christine, Tamara and Brad. You stepped in when my own Mom passed away and treated me as one of your own. Your beautiful heart and love are reflected in your wonderful daughters and son and they will continue to carry on the legacy you have left behind. I love you so much and will miss you. Until I see you again Momma, all my love Jane.

Sympathy to Christine (and Family) on the death of your mother. While I heard you speak of your mom on occasion, I enjoyed seeing her photo and story in the obituary. She certainly sounds like a firecracker who leaves a large space in your life. I hope to hear some stories soon.

Chris, Tamara and the rest of Charlottes family,
I was so sorry to hear about your moms passing. I remember meeting her when we were in junior high. And then she was the one that called to tell me I was hired at the Sheriffs Office in 1985. She was always such a nice woman. I know she will be missed. If I still lived in Iowa, I would be there for her funeral. My deepest sympathies to all of you.

So sorry about Charlotte's passing. Char was one of my mom's best friends. That friendship extends back to the "old neighborhood" in West Des Moines when we were all kids. A lot of good memories will be told for a long time! I'm thinking of you all: Chris, Tamara, Brad, and all Charlotte's extended family during this sad time.

Dear Christine, Tamara and family,
Please accept deepest condolences from me and my family and the Belmont Estate family on the passing of your mum. She was a beautiful and sweet soul and I was grateful that I have the opportunity to meet her in Grenada.
She lives on in all of you. Do live with the memories of the beautiful person that she was and the loving relationship that you shared with her.
May God comfort you doing this time.
With love,
Shadel
