James J. Shortell

James Shortell, 92, passed away June 22, 2023 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

James was born March 1, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa. He retired from Monarch Cement Company. James was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and as a heavy machinery operator, he was tasked with laying down airstrips for the American troops.

In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing and hunting. He was an active member of the Salvation Army Church where he played guitar, sang, and was an usher.

Left to mourn his loss is his wife of 56 years, Wanda Shortell: three children, four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Shortell, and his seven siblings.

Celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Salvation Army Church Community Center, 1216 E. 25th Court in Des Moines, Iowa.
