Shirlee A. Harlan
June 20, 2023
Shirlee A. Harlan, age 92, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Carlisle Center for Wellness & Rehab. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Shirlee was born in Des Moines on September 12, 1930. She married Robert L. Harlan, Sr. on September 22, 1949, and together had their three most precious sons, who have been the most loving and devoted children to their parents. Shirlee had great compassion for all who needed help, including all animals. She loved all of her dear friends and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Her greatest achievement, however, was being a born-again Christian (John 3:16).
Shirlee retired from Consumer Credit of Des Moines as a Client Service Specialist after working there for 15 years and will be missed by all who knew her. Previous to Consumer Credit Shirlee worked several years in the Credit Department of Younkers Department Store downtown. She worked as a Charge-Off Collector and a Skip Tracer, where she earned the name of “Super Snooper”.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; dear deaf parents, Paul A. and Katherine Johns; her beloved sister, Betty J. Denin; and her dear brother, Dr. Paul A. Johns.
Left to mourn her leaving this life are her three faithful sons, Robert L. “Bobby” (Ivonne) Harlan, Jr., Donald E. “Donny” (Robin) Harlan, and James M. "Jimmy” (Jeanne) Harlan, along with 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
According to Shirlee’s wishes cremation has occurred and she will be buried with her husband at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Shirlee’s name.

From the moment we met, I knew we would be friends forever. So many fun times from working together, going out for breakfast and our trips to Branson. I will miss our fun and our serious talks, our love of animals, and all our silly laughing. May you be riding a motorcycle, holding on to Bob's waist. Fly high my sparkly friend, until we are together again eating biscuits and gravy together at the local cloud. My sincere condolences to your boys, and entire family.

Oh sweet Shirlee! She always had a sweet and bright smiling face whenever I got to see her. I will always remember Shirlee with her Furby, and her Furby story about it being in her car trunk.
Thoughts and Prayers for the family during this difficult time.
