Linda Sue Hegland, 72, passed away Monday, June 19, 2023, at her home in Des Moines.

Linda was born April 20, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Dorothy (Skeels) Smith.

Most important in Linda’s life were her family and friends. Her granddaughters were her pride and joy and she loved going to all their activities, especially cheering the loudest at track events. She was full of life, loved to have fun, and was always singing and dancing. Linda loved to spend time with the “Golden Girls”, her beloved lifelong friends Diane Bishop, Denise White, and Sandra Knox. She enjoyed going to Prairie Meadows with her sisters to play the slot machines. Linda loved to stay active and enjoyed swimming, water aerobics, and going out to lunch with her friends and coworkers. She liked watching reality TV shows, her favorites being “Big Brother” and “Survivor”, and was an avid fan of the Olympic Games. Linda was the best hostess and would always cook full Thanksgiving dinners with a main course for everyone in attendance from turkey to lasagna to her famous chicken and noodles. She loved life and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Brian (Monica) Hegland and Stephanie (Greg) Hegland Doonan; sisters, Patti (Tim) Smith and Sandra Hegland Knox; granddaughters, Hanna, Gretta, Alana, and Mia; and other extended family and friends.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dorothy Smith and siblings, Jerry Smith, Richard Berkland, Deloris Edward, Dorothy Magnani, Bobette Gephart, Margaret Butters, David Smith, and Gloria Smith.

A celebration of life will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines.
