Service Details

With broken hearts we are sad to announce the passing of Jackson “Jack” Barsness on June 5th, 2023 in Urbandale, Iowa. Jack was born November 21st 2002 to Matt Barsness and Annette Hussey in Mason City Iowa. His family moved to Sioux City then settling in Johnston Iowa. He graduated from Urbandale High School in 2020.

He had a warm spirit and kind soul always drawing people in. Growing up Jack had a knack for making friends wherever he went, like his family they were just drawn to his sweetness, zest for being in the moment and creative imagination. He was his wonderful unique self always playing with something and taking care of the many frogs and turtles that crossed his path.

Jack never lost that compassion for others as he grew older he loved his family restlessly and we loved him just as much. Yet that couldn’t save him from dependency. His family tried countless times to help him on his journey, but addiction is a beast he couldn’t get past.

His mother will always remember the blue of his beautiful eyes and that he could always get her to smile. His older sister loved how he could make her laugh in any given situation. His twin sisters were always safe with Jack, he would protect them at any cost, and they had fun rough housing and playing video games with him. He was his sisters’ best friend, their cheerleader and champion.

Jacks warm smile and dance abilities will be greatly missed by his mother, Annette Hussey; sisters, Josephine, Addy and Lulu Barsness; grandparents, Dan Hussey and Judy Barsness; aunts and uncles, Amanda (Sam) Martin, Sue (John) Stoffer along with all of his cousins. He will forever be our “Jacky” that we tried so hard to save and loved so deeply.

All of his family encourages you to take drastic measures when you notice mental illness/addiction of a loved one reach out to healthcare providers immediately. It won’t be easy, but it is necessary to stop it as early as possible. It will be heartbreaking at times, difficult and frustrating yet they are worth all your efforts.

We will have a celebration of life this fall to honor Jack after we have time to grieve and heal.
