In loving memory of Betty Thielen, a devoted resident of Des Moines and a compassionate entrepreneur, who peacefully passed away in her sleep on June 4 at her Avon home at the age of 88.

Born as Betty Virginia Jensen in Audubon, IA, to Fred and Ellen Jensen (Johnson), Betty embraced a life dedicated to service.

Betty was preceded in death by her ex-husband Robert Thielen and her daughter Linda White. Mother of Dan Jensen (Jim Jensen) of Santa Rosa, CA, Darryl Thielen, and Larry Thielen of Des Moines. Grandmother to Holly Stecker (Chad), Sherri Hall, Rick Hall (Sejla), Joshua Hall (Michelle), and Katie Cosimo (Michael), cherishing her role as a matriarch.

Additionally, she was blessed with ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and siblings Neil Jensen of Pryor, OK, David Jensen of Bartlesville, OK, and Charlotte Andersen (Ron) of Washington, IA.

Betty's life took a meaningful turn when she moved to Des Moines in 1970, leaving behind her role as a farmer's wife and homemaker on the Thielen homestead. She embraced new opportunities and embarked on a journey of service to her community. Known affectionately as "Miss Betty" beyond her family circle, she dedicated many years to serving others as a server at Maxie's, Micheal's, Judge Roy Beans, and the Gin Mill.

Together with her son Darryl, Betty co-owned and operated Dally's Bar in Des Moines, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit. She also took pride in managing properties leaving an indelible mark on the community.

Betty's life was guided by faith, and she actively participated in the Hope+Elim Lutheran Church. Her dedication led her to serve coffee on Sundays before the service and lend a helping hand serving meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas at the St. Joseph’s. Her acts of kindness reflected her deeply rooted values and her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Beyond her contributions to her community, Betty had a passion for gardening and a deep sense of pride in her Danish heritage. These aspects of her life brought her immense joy and fulfillment.

As we bid farewell to Betty, the family will hold a graveside service at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Avon Cemetery, 3995 Hart Ave., Des Moines . In honor of her memory, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hope-Elim or ARL of Des Moines, as these were causes close to Betty's heart.
