Lloyd Wayne Hughes, Jr.
of Des Moines, Iowa
Lloyd Hughes, Jr., age 61, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2023. He was born on October 1, 1961, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lloyd had a strong faith and enjoyed attending church. He was very civically minded, he loved volunteering his time and donating back to his community.
Some of his hobbies and interests included, fishing, bowling, taking cooking classes, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs, especially napping with them. In his free time, Lloyd relished traveling! He enjoyed cruises to Hawaii and the Bahamas and was thankful to get healthier these past couple years and as a result he became more adventurous. One great accomplishment of his involved him repelling off a 17 story building last year, and he was looking forward to skydiving in July. Lloyd lived life to the fullest and always had a smile on his face. Making connections with people was important to him wherever he went. He never knew a stranger and developed many strong bonds with those around him. He will be lovingly remembered for not being able to keep a secret and sneaking sweets, he was honest to a fault! Lloyd will be missed by many.
Celebration of Lloyd’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines followed by visitation until 3:00 p.m. Private urn burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Central Iowa Center for Independent Living (CICIL) in Lloyd’s name.

He was a dear friend to my brother Bob. He looked after him and was in so many ways his gaurdian angel. He was always so excited to see both my sister and me when we would visit. He was always happy. Always curious. Always interested. He will be missed by our family.

I have known Lloyd since the mid to late 1970s. Growing up in Pleasant Hill together, sharing so many great experiences: fishing, long bike rides to Thomas Mitchell Park and dirt clod fights in and around all the new construction. Lloyd always remembered important things about your life and family and would alway inquire about them on e wry meeting. He was honest and a truly caring person. Fun to be around and a true friend the kind you have for a lifetime. Lloyd I will miss your frequent phone calls. Tell my dad hi when you see him and catch a big one for me.
