Richard "Rick" Gale Card
May 27, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Richard “Rick” Gale Card, 75, on May 27, 2023 after a lengthy illness. He passed at his home with his family.
Rick was born in Waterloo, Iowa to Floyd Card, Sr. and Alma (Buckridge) Card and grew up in Evansdale, Iowa. He joined the Navy and served on the USS constellation for 2 tours in the Tonkin Gulf from 1967-1968 and was an Airdaler AE4 aviation electrician. He loved watching the planes get shot off and recovered. Rick loved his time in the Navy but said once was enough. He started at Ma Bell as a lineman when there was still open wire in use and did his share of ice storms for 2 years. He then moved to cable splicer and a switchman on step by step equipment. He retired in 2006 after 40 years of service. During retirement he enjoyed daily AA meetings with friends, the hunt for ‘treasures’ at garage sales and projects around the house. Rick tried to find the good in everyone and the good in any situation.
In 1973, he married Karen (Majerus) Card. Rick summed up his marriage this way, “We did everything together, even some crazy stuff. I thought it up, and she was right with me without a second thought.“ They had two children, Danny Lee Card and Judy Renee Card; two grandsons, Jacob Aaron Card and Colton Lee Card (Regina); and one great-grandson, Nicholas Aaron Card.
Rick is survived by his wife, Karen Card; his children; grandsons; great-grandson; brothers, Joe (Mary) Card and Kent (Pauline) Card; sister-in-law, Liz Card; many nieces and nephews; and those special children in his life that knew him only as ‘Papa Rick.’
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma (Buckridge) Card; father, Floyd Card, Sr.; mother-in-law, Lillian Majeris; father-in-law, Tony Majerus; brother, Curt Card; sisters, Renee Cagley, Cindy Adams, and Patti Cohen; sister-in-law, Linda Kaufman; and brother-in-law, Marc Kaufman.
Services will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa with visitation prior from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Rick requested donations be made to the family for donation to charities of his choice.

Karen... I am so sorry for your loss. I still remember the eulogy Rick did for Tom Marks... it was so cool. I will not be able to attend the funeral, but hope someone does for him, what he did for Tom.
