Betty J. Maples

Betty Jean Maples, age 101, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa.

Betty was born November 26, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa to Neil John Caldwell and Ruby (Goldsberry) Caldwell. She lived most of her life in the Des Moines area. She married James F. Maples and worked both as an office worker for the Iowa Department of Transportation and also as a banquet worker for Hotel Ft. Des Moines. She retired in 1989. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shrine.

She is survived by her daughter, Joanna Sweet, grandchildren, Jerry (Laurie) Slater, Roger (Trudie) Sweet, Rick (Amy) Sweet, and Lisa (John) Longman; great-grandchildren, Amanda Mason, Mindy Mason, Brady Sweet, Abby Sweet, and Melissa Sweet; and her daughter-in-law, Sue Slater.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Jerry Slater; grandchildren, Wendy Sue Slater and Frank John Slater; parents, Neil and Ruby Caldwell; and six siblings.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines on Friday, May 26, 2023. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
