Virginia Powers

Virginia Alice Powers passed away May 14, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 22, 2023 at St. Augustin Catholic Church, 4320 Grand Ave. in Des Moines, IA at 12:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.

Virginia was born in Cresco, IA to Thekla (Holthaus) and Henry Philip Kapler. After high school, she moved to San Francisco and worked in the Department of Radiology at the University of California. While in California, she met and married Theodore Powers. The couple eventually moved back to Iowa and started their family where Virginia was a devoted mom and homemaker. After the children were grown, she attended Drake University and was extremely proud to open the first Cardiac Rehab in the state of Iowa on January 2, 1980 at Mercy Hospital. Virginia retired from Mercy in 1992.

In her retirement, she was active with many activities including the YEWS, Inc. as President and the VIP Group.

Virginia is survived by her children, Jeffrey Kapler Powers, and Shawn Kelley Powers; her sister-in-law, Bootie Kapler; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore Powers; her siblings, Leonard Kapler, Robert Kapler, Herman “Ike” Kapler, Marie Mackenburg, Annette Polashek and Corrine Moudry.
