Joseph Pitts, 62, of Clive, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on May, 15, 2023 after a courageous battle with ALS. Joseph was born in Norway, Maine on October 30, 1960 to Donna and Russell Pitts. He grew up in Maine and Connecticut and attended Manchester Community College in Connecticut and then received a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Connecticut University. Joseph married Jeanne Berger, and together they had 2 beautiful children, Elizabeth and Amy. They were happily married for 38 years. He worked as a Director of Workmen’s Compensation at GuideOne in West Des Moines before enjoying his retirement this past fall. He enjoyed taking cross country trips while exploring new places on his motorcycle and loved spending time with his grandchildren. As a man of faith, he was an active member of Living Faith Church in Clive. He was also actively involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa and made an impact on many young lives for the past 12 years. In 2022, he was a nominee for Big Brother of the year. He will be remembered by family and friends for his sense of humor, giving spirit, and devotion to his family.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Jeanne Pitts; two daughters, Elizabeth (Tim) Kurowski of Delafield, WI and Amy (Austin) Duede of Waukee; 6 grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Emma, Liam, Aiden, and Asher; 2 beloved dogs, Max and Maggie. He is also survived by his brother, Charles (Bonnie) Pitts of Tolland, CT; his sister, Karen (Chris Gilman) Pitts of Mount Desert, ME; brother and sisters-in-law, Pierre and Karen Berger of Leesburg, FL and Helene Berger of Fort Worth, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Donna and Russell Pitts.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines with visitation on Sunday, May 21, 2023 from 4-6 p.m. and the memorial service and celebration of his life on Monday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m. A burial service will be held at a later time this summer at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Memorial donations may be made in Joseph’s name to the ALS Foundation or Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa.
