Service Details

Joann Pierce was born on June 28, 1932, to Robert and Ruby (Griffith) Crawford. She died on May 8, 2023, and was 90 years old.

Joann grew up in Des Moines and graduated from North High School in 1950. Not long after, she met George Pierce, the love of her life. They were married on June 16, 1956, at Grace Lutheran Church.

Above all else, Joann loved being a Mother and Grandmother. Her family was everything to her. She stayed at home to raise her children until she started working at Bell Telephone in 1977 until her retirement in 1995. After her retirement, she and George traveled and enjoyed bus trips with friends. Her greatest joy was the time spent with her grandchildren which included countless hours of babysitting and as they grew older watching them play sports.

She also loved to watch sports on TV including baseball, college basketball, and golf. She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and cheered for both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones basketball teams. Tom Kite was her favorite golfer and she was always overjoyed when he was playing well. While watching all those sports, she crocheted beautiful gifts for her family and friends.

She attended Grace Lutheran church throughout her lifetime and was an active member for many years. She sang in the choir, led the alter guild, and was a member of the Martha circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Immie, her brother Bob, and her husband George.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Craig (Geri), Kurt (Roxanne), Kevin (JoAnn) and Carla (Robb); grandchildren, Candace (Austin), Chelsea (Anthony), Brittni (Tony), Brooke, Luke, Brandon, and Jordan; and many friends and relatives.

There will be a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 52nd Street, Des Moines, IA. There will be an interment at Glendale Cemetery at a later date where she will once again be reunited with George.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
