Karen J. Pewick
April 21, 2023
Karen JoAnn Statnick Pewick, 66, passed away on April 21, 2023 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on September 17, 1956 to Walter and Geraldine Statnick. Karen obtained her Bachelor of Science from Mercy College of Nursing. She met her husband Mike while working at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center. They married in December 1987. Their family grew with two boys, Christopher, adopted 1991, and Matthew, adopted 1997.
Karen radiated acceptance, love, and joy in all that she did with her work, community, and family. Her ability to be candid, yet always kind and caring, led her to become the Director of Nursing at Valley View Village for 25 years. Most recently, she was the Wellness Coordinator at Bickford of Urbandale. Karen worked hard and always prioritized what mattered most: caring for people.
As much as she cared for others in her career, she always made time to enjoy life outside of work and relax with loved ones. She loved to decorate and celebrate. Her home and office reflected her beautiful, cheery mind; they always welcomed people to come be and enjoy themselves. She loved watching people have a good time! Karen valued traveling and making memories with friends and family. Her big smile, giggle, and joy were ever so present during holiday dinners, on the side of a race track, appreciating a beach view, and when filling shopping bags full of new, colorful decorations.
May we remember the way she impacted our lives and carry the effects of her love with us.
Karen is survived by her husband, Mike; children, Chris (Annie) Pewick and Matt (Emily) Pewick; niece and nephew, Michelle (Jamie) Reesman and James (Cheryl) Statnick.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Geraldine Statnick; brother, Richard (Donna) Statnick and aunts, Carol Kemp and Margaret Bodnar.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. Visitation will be on Friday, April 28, 2023 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be donated to the Iowa Chapter of American Cancer Society.

I am just heartbroken to hear of Karen's passing. I have known Karen for many years since we were both Directors of Nursing at care facilities and supported one another in these roles. We also attended Mercy College of Health Sciences together for our BSN. Whenever I think of Karen, I always see her smiling or laughing. She was a very kind soul and an excellent Director of Nursing. My thoughts and prayers for her family. May she Rest In Peace.
