Service Details

Pearl C. Halls, 91, passed away on April 22, 2023 at The Bridges at Ankeny, in Ankeny, IA surrounded by loved ones after a lengthy battle with dementia.

Pearl was born to Toot & Jessie Weaver on June 23, 1931 in Woodburn, IA. While in school, Pearl loved playing basketball and she graduated as one of the top students in her class. A few days after graduation, Pearl married the love of her life, Herb Halls, on May 20, 1951. They were married for more than 67 years, until Herb’s passing in 2018. Together they had four children; Sandy (Bob) Straker, Russ Halls, Daryl (Denise) Halls, and Sue Halls. They were then blessed with grandchildren; Joe (Kelly) Straker, Nicole (Ricky) Straker, Kassie (Mike) Straker, Heidi (Mike) Sams, Chelsea (Ben) Schmoll, Daryl Halls II, Ashley Halls, and Matt (Amy) Halls.

Pearl and Herb settled down in the Des Moines area where they raised their family and were involved with the community. Pearl had a variety of jobs over the years but there were two roles that suited her best – being a loving mother/homemaker and a daycare provider for several years. Her door was always open for anyone needing a roof over their head or a meal in their belly. Pearl’s help was just a phone call away.

Pearl supported Herb with his Boy Scout troops and several troop functions. Herb volunteered with the Saylor Township Fire Department, with Pearl assisting by being a member of the Saylor Township Fire Dept. Auxiliary.

Pearl enjoyed gardening, sewing, and having family gatherings. She was a member of Highland Park Christian Church. Pearl and Herb shared a love of bluegrass music with each other, which they later shared with their grandkids by taking them camping at bluegrass festivals in the summers.

Pearl was the matriarch of her family; the glue that held the family together.

Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herb; her son, Russ; and all her siblings.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines, IA. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the church. Interment will follow services at the Derby Cemetery in Derby, IA.

A special ‘Thank You’ to The Bridges at Ankeny, for their care of Mom during her final years.
