Gloria Jean Wilson, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Arbor Springs Care Center with her family by her side.

Gloria was born October 5, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa to Fred Brooke McCracken, Sr. and Margaret Pauline (Lindsay) McCracken. Gloria graduated from North High School and worked for 33 years at American Can Co.

She was a second-generation lifelong member of St. Paul AME Church where she was part of several ministries: Usherettes, Benevolence Committee, Kitchen Committee, with her favorite being Promise Families (f/k/a The Interfaith Hospitality Ministry). Gloria volunteered with Generations and spent her retirement years serving the Lord. She also loved attending musical events, basketball games, track meets, and soccer matches of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a hands-on grandmother and didn’t miss any of their events if she could help it. She also liked joining her husband at car show and car club events. Gloria was a member of the Iowa Club the Des Moines Chapter. She also was an avid exerciser and enjoyed power walking and aerobics with “Annetta’s Aerobic” group here at St. Paul.

She is survived by her husband, Robert V. Wilson “Bobby”; daughter, Donise Cannaday; stepsons, Danny Wilson (Jeanine), Todd Adams; grandchildren, Sterling Cannaday, Lindsay Cannaday, Bailey Irvin, Ashley Robinson (Anthony), Marianna Adams, Porsha Wilson; great grandchildren, Ryan Stevenson, Kyson Hubers, Jaylon Hubers, Antoine Robinson, Heiress Contreras; brother, Sylvester McCracken (Mary Dean); aunt, Margaret May; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special lifelong friends (Hazel Sloan, Camille Bradley, Celeste Davis, and Elaine “Sissy” Williams).

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Margaret; sister, Barbara Jane Parkey; brother, Fred McCracken, Jr.; great granddaughter, Ella Melody Cannaday; and goddaughter, Yvonne Sloan Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023, at St. Paul AME Church, 1201 Day Street, Des Moines. The family will begin greeting guests one hour prior to the funeral. For those who cannot attend the service in person, it will be livestreamed through the link below. There will be a brunch following the service.
