David E. Allen, 83, of Des Moines, IA passed away at his home on April 10, 2023. David was born on October 27, 1939 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Robert Evan and Joan (Bell) Allen. He served as a medic in the United States Air Force and received a BA in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin. David had a long and rewarding career in zoo administration, most recently as the director of the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines.
David was a loving father and grandfather. Terry Jacoby Allen, his wife of 43 years, passed away in 2011. He is survived by his three sons, Matthew (Heather), Christopher, and Andrew (Whitney) and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at the Blank Park Zoo, 7401 SW 9th Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the World Wildlife Fund.

A man of great passion, David was my friend. He allowed me to flourish as a zoo vet. He definitely left his mark on the earth by his time this side of heaven. He was a great zoo professional. I loved his stories although you usually had to cut him off. as they frequently got too long. Love you, David

We miss seeing David around Blank Park Zoo. It was so nice to see him at an event last year. Our deepest sympathies. A memorial has been given to the World Wildlife Fund.
