Thomas Hughes
April 08, 2023
Thomas O. Hughes passed away on April 8, 2023. He was born September 30, 1948, to Everett and Juanita (Allen) Hughes in Columbia, SC but grew up in Des Moines near the Saydel area.
Following his graduation from high school Tom proudly served in the Air National Guard. He worked full time for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years.
Tom enjoyed golf, playing cards, shopping, NASCAR, and football. He loved games of every kind from Dave and Busters, to the casinos, to every gaming system.
He loved to travel. When he got to where he was going the first thing Tom would ask is “where is the casino?” One of his favorite trips was to Hawaii with his daughter. He loved looking at old photos and kept trunks of those.
Tom was diagnosed two months ago with cancer, and went to Ohio to be with his daughter. He passed away at the James OSU hospital.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Christie Hughes; niece, Stacey Hughes; and nephew, Kelly Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Juanita (Allen) Hughes; brother, Gary Hughes; and niece, Nikky Hughes.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, in Des Moines. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of Tom.

I knew Tommy from high school days when our teams wrestled against each other. We then reconnected while working for the U.S. Postal Service at the Main P.O. in Des Moines. We were both on the Morning Fast Pitch Softball Team. Tom was a dear friend. He will be missed and memories cherished.
