Service Details

Carol Rachel Jefferson, 75, passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 7, 2023, surrounded by family. She was born on December 15, 1947, in Chicago, Il to Elijah and Frances Jefferson. Growing up she enjoyed drawing and playing various games and sports. During her early years she even worked at a department store that was often frequented by the likes of Muddy Waters and other well-known musicians.

Her life would forever be changed (for the better) when she gave birth to her first, and only child, Michael, in January of 1982. She made sure to lay the foundation for his success at an early age, teaching him independence and taking him to various events which placed him in diverse environments. One of the most memorable events she enjoyed taking him to was the yearly performance of Handel’s Messiah, which took place at her childhood church, Greater Bethesda. They would also take random trips via the Metra train to go look at houses and other architecture; her favorites were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

When she was not taking Michael to a museum or watching him play basketball, she was known to spend time with her “crazy” friends. Whether it was helping proctor SAT exams for high school students, planning black history month events, or having lunch discussions with her work crew from “First Prez,” she was always there to lend an ear, or give insightful advice.

In December of 2005, she met her future daughter-in-law, Jill, for the first time. They hit it off immediately and four years later she became a part of the family. Shortly after, in 2012, Michael and Jill blessed her with her first grandchild, Miles. And in 2014, she was blessed again with her second grandchild, Jaxon. After a few years into retirement, she moved from Chicago to Iowa to be closer to Michael, Jill, and her grandbabies. She enjoyed watching them play all their sports, including basketball, soccer, baseball, and hockey. She also loved to play video games with them too.

Carol had the biggest heart and would do anything to help anyone.
She is survived by her son Michael and daughter-in-law Jill; her two grandchildren, Miles and Jaxon and her cousins and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

A private service has been held by the immediate family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made in Carol’s honor to her family and will be distributed according to her wishes.
