Douglas Richmond Surber, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

Douglas was born June 23, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa to Hurshel and Lillian Surber. He achieved Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in 1943, prior to his graduation from East High School in Des Moines in 1945. Doug was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy from 1945-1947, serving as a Navy Air Radioman and a Navy Instructor (NATTC) in Morse code and Semaphore.

Doug went on to attend the American Institute of Business from 1947-1949, and was employed by Nabisco following his graduation from AIB for 23 years. Doug founded Surber Realtors, and was a certified RE Broker, RE Specialist, and Property Manager. He was a graduate of the RE Institute, and was educated in Community Investment Studies. Surber Realtors was in business from 1968 until 1985.

Doug also founded Surber Property Management and was active in Knoxville, IA, Maui, HI, and Des Moines, IA from 1968 until 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, who was the love of his life for 62 years; his daughters, Denise (Don) Pollock of Virginia, Crystal (Aaron) Kephart of Des Moines, Stephanie Surber of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Karen Surber; grandchildren, Greg (Tessa) Surber, Phil (Lauren) Surber, Jessica (John) Whitaker, Ryan Pollock, Mikayla (Scott) Pelzer, Gracyn Kephart (Jake Smith); great-grandchildren, Phillip, Andrew, Callan, Lydia, Sophia and Stephen Surber, Aaden and Josi Whitaker, Sage and Lily Pollock.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Hurshel and Lillian Surber; brothers, Hurshel “Kemo” Surber, Stanley Surber; and his son, Doug Surber II.

Doug and Sue lived an amazing and exciting life surrounded by their loving friends and family on the entire journey. What more could one ask?

Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family for a future designation.
