Susan Jane (Swihart) Gross, age 83, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines. She died peacefully while being cared for by Suncrest Hospice.

Susan was born October 12, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa to Harold A. Swihart, Sr. and Margaret I. Swihart. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1958. She lived most of her life in the San Francisco Bay area. She married Jerry Lee Gross, who worked for United Press International, and due to his employment, the family had the opportunity to travel all over. Together they had two sons, Kurt and Karl. Susan worked as a Programs Analyst for Hewlett-Packard, as an Administrative Assistant at Bechtel, and then at TheraSense. Susan moved back to Iowa in 2016. While her work was important to her, she had a passion for so many more adventures. She backpacked through Europe and India while in her 50s for over three months. She was a talented pianist, starting in high school playing for Glee Clubs, then moved on to playing for multiple churches all over the United States.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry and her parents, Harold and Margaret Swihart. Susan is survived by her sons, Karl (Adele) Gross and Kurt (Pamela) Gross; grandchildren, Jessica and Conner; and siblings, Nancy (Randy) Ross and Harold (Sherry) Swihart, Jr.

According to Susan’s wishes, cremation will occur and there will be no services held at this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Suncrest Hospice or the East High Alumni Association, Class of ‘58. A sincere thank you to Suncrest Hospice and Donita, Consuella, and Luz with Trinity Center for their excellent care of Susan.
