Karen Kay Janes

Karen Janes, 68, passed away peacefully at Harmony House Nursing Home in West Des Moines on March 24, 2023.

Karen Kay Halterman was born on May 22, 1954 in Osceola, Iowa to Wanda (Jones) and Melvin Halterman. Growing up, Karen loved riding horses and she went on to win awards with her horse, Rusty. She graduated from Norwalk High School. Karen married Mark Janes on August 27, 1977 and the couple had two children, Mark Jr and Chelsea. She worked for Hamilton's Funeral Home as a courier and system wide support member before retiring in 2010.

In her free time, Karen enjoyed vacationing with her family, supporting her children who raced, riding motorcycles, camping and boating and finding the best deals at thrift stores, just to name a few.

Karen is survived by her former spouse, Mark Janes; daughter, Chelsea (Rick) Wyman of Ankeny; grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Kaylee and Natalie; siblings, Sandra (Fred) Kokke and Brenda Bond, both of Des Moines; along with extended family and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Marky Janes Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Saylor Township Fire Department Hall, 211 NW 54th Avenue in Des Moines. A private burial will be held at a later date.
