Donald "Don" Cheek

Donald “Don” Cheek, 68, passed away on March 23, 2023 in Des Moines. He was born in Des Moines on October 31, 1954, the son of Ray and Marilyn (Cooper) Cheek.

Don worked various jobs and retired from Firestone. He loved fishing, race cars, baseball, especially the Yankees and Cubs, and all things Iowa Hawkeye sports. Don was a “Foodie”. He treasured time more than he treasured gifts, but was a huge giver - would give you the shirt off his back. Don loved to laugh. He took the family to many baseball games and concerts. Faith was very important to Don. He always had a joke in his back pocket. Don was an optimist till the very end. He never met a stranger and was a huge dog lover. He never forgot the single ladies in his life, Luanne and Bethany, on Valentine’s Day. He always made sure they got a “special” gift.

Don is survived by his sister, Luanne Bates; nephew, Joshua Bates; nieces, Bethany Bates and Courtney (Christian) Lucht and many cousins. Best friends since junior high school, Bob Coash, Jeff Templeton, Steve Forest, Mike Curry, Rick Keeler and Dorine Lawrence.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandpa Glen Cooper; grandma Mary Ann (Nina) (Crouch) Cheek and very special aunt Helen Cooper and special grandma, Helen Cooper.

Don was a friend of my brother Bob, but all our family loved his smiling face and great personality. He always had a smile.
