Richard Abell

Richard Elmo Abell, 95, passed away on March 20, 2023, at Altoona Nursing and Rehab in Altoona, Iowa. He was born in Creston, IA on April 13, 1927, to Cecil and Lula Abell.

In February 1945 he served as Carpenters Mate 3rd Class in the US Navy.

On May 19th, 1948 he was married to Donna Raye Conley in Creston, Iowa. This May they would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

Dick first and foremost loved the Lord, his family, good food, playing his guitar and singing, horses and his dogs. His career was spent as plant superintendent at Little Giant Crane and Shovel in Des Moines, Iowa. Dick was a carpenter by trade and built many beautiful homes. He retired to the Lake of the Ozarks where he built his last home and enjoyed his time at the lake. Dick and Donna moved back to Pleasant Hill, Iowa in 2004 to be closer to family.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Donna; children, David (Dana) Abell of Gravois Mills, MO, Richard (Marcia) Abell of Omaha, NE and LuJana Davis of West Des Moines. Also, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Joan and Linda and granddaughter, Brenda.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Family will greet friends at 1:00 p.m., prior to services at the funeral home.
