Robert Dawson

Robert Eugene Dawson, 94 of Runnells, Iowa passed away into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ on March 11, 2023.

Robert was born August 8, 1928 in Missouri to Horace and Ada Dawson. He was the first of six children, two sisters and three brothers. He attended school until beginning work with his father farming. His family moved to Runnells, Iowa in 1943. Soon after Robert met the love of his life Barbara Hunnell. They were married on July 26, 1947. They had one child, a daughter who passed away at birth on October 8, 1949. Robert and Barbara grew their family later in life by raising two great-nieces, sisters Anna Kain and Jessica Hunnell.

Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a farmer all of his life. He was a deeply devoted family man. He valued the partnership he shared with his beloved wife Barbara, as evident in their 75 years of dedicated marriage. Robert had the warmest of hearts for children, embracing his opportunity to raise his great-nieces as his own girls.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Dawson; great-niece, Jessica Hunnell; brother, Basil (Linda) Dawson; sister, Edna Mae (Don) Hedlund; and a long list of special nieces and nephews, family and friends who loved and cherished him dearly.

Robert was preceded in death by his infant daughter; parents, Horace and Ada Dawson; great-niece, Anna Kain; brothers, Gerald Dawson and Richard Dawson; and sister, Ellen Lane.

Family will greet friends Friday, March 24, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. Funeral service will be held the following day Saturday March 25, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will occur directly following the service at Lowman Cemetery in Runnells. Services will be livestreamed. The Livestream link will be posted at the end of this obituary on the day of the service.
