Service Details

James Allen Schroeder of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on March 6, 2023, of esophageal cancer.

Jim fought long and hard. Even after undergoing two different types of chemo and finding out neither worked, his wife, mother, and aunt drove him to Iowa City where doctors prescribed a different type of chemo that worked in 20% of patients. Jim had one treatment and two weeks later suffered a stroke early in the morning of February 25th. He went into Hospice care the same day. He passed at his mother’s farmhouse, per his wishes, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born April 29, 1970, in Des Moines, Iowa to Darla and Ray Schroeder. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1988. Soon after high school, he started dating his wife, Jill Sellner. They were married on October 21, 1995.

Jim enjoyed traveling. He and Jill went on many beautiful vacations. He especially enjoyed sitting by the ocean and walking along the beach. Jim loved to garden. He planted a huge vegetable and flower garden at their home each year. Jim also enjoyed auto racing and football. His favorite driver was Ryan Newman and he was a dedicated Iowa State Cyclones and Denver Broncos fan. In his free time, Jim loved to sit by the fire, enjoy a good IPA, and watch the stars.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Jill Schroeder; his mother, Darla Shaw; father, Raymond Schroeder (Bernice Mohn); sisters, Tammy Jones (Roger), Tina Schroeder and Sara Schroeder; brothers, Roger Schroeder (Carmen), Jerry Schroeder (Sara Clayton), Jeff Schroeder and David Schroeder (Kaylee); multiple aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Nona Shaw and Evelyn and Don Schroeder.
