Mary Cathrine Colby, 73, passed away on March 1, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital.
Mary was born August 25, 1949, the daughter of Louie and Charleen (Dougherty) Sacco. She was an Administrative Assistant with the DCI for many years before retiring from the Iowa State Patrol after 35 years of faithful service.
She had a strong Catholic faith and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society (past Secretary and Vice President), St. Vincent De Paul (past Secretary); and Finance Council (past Secretary). She was a huge Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears supporter. She was always up for a “Girls' Night Out” with her girlfriends and felt blessed with those special friendships she made through the years. Above all else, she treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her children, Christopher (Tonya) Colby, Jennifer Boyles, and Anthony “Tony” Colby; grandchildren, Justin Osterhout, Amanda Bronemann, Brandy (Matt) Bronemann, Nancy Pittman, Laura (Lacey Case) Wampole, Taylor Boyles, Lucas Boyles, and Alex Colby; great-grandchildren, Cloe, Kensleigh, Dominic, Kaeley, Elias, Christian, Kylah, Tristan, Jasper, and Calista; siblings, Timothy Sacco, Tom Sacco, Jimmy Sacco, and Julie (Tino) Backsen; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Sacco; and the love of her life, Kenny Rodine.
The family will greet friends Monday, March 6, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a time of sharing at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mary and I were friends in high school may years ago. I remember like yesterday her loving heart, her peace, her wonderful sense of humor, and her love for her family and her faith. (Special prayers for her brother, Tim, who was a friend way back then as well!) If there was anyone who made their way to heaven in a hurry, it would be Mary. She was a beautiful light that won't ever go out. Blessings and love to all her dear ones. And I hope to see you ahead in heaven, Mary! love, Sharon

To Marys family
What a lovely and carrying lady Mary was. Always helpful and always enjoyed a joke. She was not afraid of some tomfoolery in headquarters whether it was on her or someone else. We have very found memories of Mary and are glad we got to know her. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mary & I met in 1964 when we were members of St. John's and the High Hopes singing group. We were also roommates after high school and had many adventures. We remained close over the years even when I moved away from Des Moines and have so many fond memories - but some of them could only be shared with each other! Our most fun adventure was visiting our friend Sherry in Hawaii. We always hoped we would go again but that was not to be. Things will be so different without her in my life & I'll miss her forever. She was greeted in heaven by so many family members and good friends. Sending hugs to the family.
