Vernon Thomas Bauer, 87 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 2/22/23. He was born June 8th 1935 in Newton, Iowa to Delbert and Rita Bauer.

He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School and was a proud 60 + year member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 33. He enjoyed many things, first being family. He really enjoyed the grandkids and watching them grow up. Vern was very health conscious and ran many marathons, Dam to Dam’s and rode on 8 or 9 Ragbrai’s.

Vern also went trail riding every day in his later years. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and went to many bowl games and had season tickets for many years. He loved family vacations at Table Rock Lake. Vern’s theme song in life was “I Did It My Way”.

Vern is survived by his wife of 65 years Carole, Son Scott (Denise), daughter Kim (Bob), son-in-law Kevin (Kristen) Leonard, brothers Delbert (Dottie) Bauer and Bill (Roma) Bauer. Grandchildren, Steven Bauer (Brittany), Luke Bauer (Katie), Shauna Cross (Ronnie), TJ Cross, Ellie Leonard, Sam Leonard, and Kobe Leonard and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Lori, and brothers John and Guy Bauer, and sisters Barbara Buchanan, Clarita Cunningham and Leanna Haines.

The family would like to thank the UnityPoint Hospice Orange Team and the Taylor House for their excellent care.

At Vern’s request, there will be no services. A private burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
