Larry Peterson
February 20, 2023
Larry Gene Peterson, age 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.
Larry was born July 22, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa to Harry and Sarah (Blair) Peterson. He met the love of his life, Shirley Jean Brown, when they both worked for Langan Paper Company in downtown Des Moines. They were married in 1962. Larry began his electrical career at Camp Dodge as a lineman. He collaborated with sheet metal workers during the floods of ’93 restoring power to those in need. He worked for many years for Marquis Electrical and retired from Bierman Electric in 1999. He was a proud member of the Electrical Union Local 347. He enjoyed fishing, tending his tomato plants and garden, and was proud of his restored 1967 John Deere tractor and his 1988 Dodge D100 pickup truck that he bought new. Larry’s greatest love was his family and the joy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him was limitless. He made friends easily and he never met a stranger.
At the time of his death, Larry was survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (who passed away 11 days after him). He is survived by his sons, Mark (Shelley) Peterson and Scott (Laura) Peterson; grandchildren, Victoria (Zach) Grossman, Ben Peterson (Katy), Erica (Hunter) Maeder, Nathan Peterson, and Gracie Peterson; great-grandchildren, Layla, Violet, and Jameson Grossman, Harrison and Autumn Peterson, and Hattie Maeder; sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the service.

Im gonna miss you dad. I am kinda lost for words. I am glad you got your wish to be at home and by moms side during your toughest of battles. I wish I could have taken all your pain away. Im so sorry for the 4 or 5 months you suffered dearly. I know you knew that you were loved. But no one loved better than you and mom. Just know I will visit you often. Love Mark.

My heart just breaks for the entire Peterson family. Larry was an amazing man, husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, great grandpa, and friend. If half of the world was as joyful, kind and loving as he was to his family more people would be married 60 plus years, live to be in their mid 80's and on and on. I will miss you Larry. God speed and I'm so glad you were part of the fabric of my life. Melinda
