Service Details

Daryl L. Tigges passed away on February 18, 2023. He was born on May 5, 1951, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Delmar and Margaret Beye Tigges and grew up on the family dairy farm south of Melbourne. Daryl worked hard at chores on the farm operation including baling hay, caring for livestock, and helping with the family’s huge vegetable garden for canning and freezing. He actively participated in 4-H and FFA, showing Holsteins and hogs at the county fair. Daryl was a member of Van Cleve United Church of Christ and was active in the youth group and church choir.

Following graduation from West Marshall School District, Daryl attended Marshalltown Community College and Iowa State University. He worked for the railroad, in manufacturing, and the hospitality industry. For most of his adult life, he resided in Marshalltown where he often had a garden.

Daryl was a sports enthusiast throughout his life, participating on youth teams and following University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and professional sports. He had a knack for remembering statistics and facts about those he followed most closely.

Beginning with piano lessons as a child, Daryl enjoyed music during his lifetime. He participated in high school and college choirs and musicals, as well as taking voice lessons. He continued to appreciate music, especially classical, as an adult. When he wasn’t listening to music or a ball game, Daryl might be writing poetry about growing up, nature, and life.

Daryl is remembered as a loving son, brother, and uncle who lived his best life. He faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and dignity, always fiercely independent. He looked forward to family celebrations, birthdays and anniversaries. He especially valued times when extended family gathered, usually each summer and at Christmas.

Daryl is survived by three siblings: Gary (Roberta) Tigges, Cathy (William) Eddy, and Pamela (Barney) Van De Weert; two nieces, Katherine Tigges (Evan Charest) and Sarah Van De Weert; and nephew, Jacob Van De Weert (Erica Moore). He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Russell and Merle (Groff) Beye and Herbert and Naoma (Wasson) Tigges; and his aunts and uncles.

The family thanks Southridge Specialty Care for the support and care given to Daryl. He was an enthusiastic participant in the many programs provided by the Activities Department.

A family memorial service and burial are planned. Memorial contributions may be given to the Southridge Specialty Care Activities Department or a charity of the donor’s choice.
