Edna Alberta Mae Hawk, 100, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Glen Oaks Care Center while under the care of Suncrest Hospice.

Edna was born October 23, 1922, in Pocahontas County, Iowa to Claude and Rena (Aden) Wilson. She graduated from Havelock High School. Edna married Melvin Hawk in 1945. They were able to enjoy ten years together before his death in 1955. She raised her four boys as a single mother in a small farm town in Iowa.

Edna moved to Des Moines in the mid-1980s. She retired from Principal Financial after many years of faithful service. She enjoyed her time there and loved singing with the Principal Singers. Singing was her passion. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she sang in their choir, ushered, and took part in the altar guild.

Edna was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching basketball, baseball, and loved cheering on the Iowa Cubs. She was never one to pass up a good card game and she especially liked pinochle and spades. She was an excellent cook and baker and enjoyed hosting get-togethers. Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Warren Hawk (Irving, TX), Gene Hawk (Des Moines, IA), and David Hawk (Irving, TX); grandchildren, Tami Hawk, Sam (Meredith) Hawk, Joe (Kevra) Hawk, Emily Hawk, and Addie Back; great-grandchildren, Spencer Hawk, Grace Hawk, Andrew Hawk, Maggie Hawk, Brody Hawk, Cooper Hawk, Bailee Back, and Carter Back; sisters, Claudette Logan and Shirley (Myles) Pedersen; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; son, Lloyd Hawk; parents, Claude and Rena Wilson; and her sisters, Helen and Mary.

Services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue Des Moines on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery in Havelock, Iowa.
