Louise Stromberg
February 14, 2023
Louise Stromberg, 91, ended her pilgrim journey here on earth to live in the presence of her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.
Louise was born November 28, 1931, in Neosho, MO to Allan Saunders and Ada Belle Parker. She was raised in Joplin, MO, before moving to Emporia, KS, and finally settling in Des Moines, IA in 1957. She married Arlie Pauley and together they raised four sons – Dennis, Ronald, Larry, and Nolan. They enjoyed 25 years of marriage until Arlie passed away on November 6, 1974. Louise married Donald LaVern Stromberg in May of 1975. She gained three step-sons – Richard, David, and Douglas. They celebrated 37 years of marriage until Donald passed away on June 3, 2012.
Louise was the beloved “Cake Lady”, owner and operator of The Cake House for over 45 years where she shared her cake baking expertise with countless customers. She specialized in weddings, but there was not an occasion she couldn’t help make even more special with her baking talent. She baked and decorated countless wedding cakes over the years. Louise loved spending time in the kitchen and was very happy to share a home-cooked meal with family and friends.
Louise’s faith in God was a driving force in her life. She accepted Jesus Christ into her life on February 14, 1950. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a longtime faithful member of New Hope Assembly of God Church. Louise believed in being active in her grief and helping others, which led to the founding of W.I.N.G.S. – Widows in Need of God’s Strength – in 2013. She extended her ministry to include cake decorating workshops for incarcerated women as well.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis G. Pauley and Larry D. Pauley; stepsons, Richard Stromberg and David Stromberg; multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends. She is also survived by her dedicated friend and caregiver, Dennis Lingenfelter.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Allan Saunders and Ada Belle Parker; first husband and father of her sons, Arlie Pauley; second husband, Donald Stromberg; sons, Ronald Pauley and Nolan Pauley; stepson, Douglas Stromberg; sister, Betty Collins; brother, Floyd Pilkenton; and great-grandson, Ethan De Vries.
Services will be held at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street, Urbandale, IA 50322, on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery after the funeral.

I first met Louise in 1986 when we hired her to bake our wedding cake. She was a remarkable woman of faith and I loved her from the first time we met her. I kept in touch with her over the years and she made our 25th wedding anniversary cake as well. She even offered her own 25th anniversary cake topper for us to use. Athough we did not use it I thought it was so typically Louise to be so generous. I am so glad that I will see her again! My condolences to the family.

Louise was a truly remarkable woman of God. She experienced many trials and loss in her life but instead of becoming hard and bitter she had a beautiful way of mentoring others in their trials. I adored her and will miss her sparkling eyes and her tender heart!
