Service Details

Max Bogle, 93, of Des Moines, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Max was born June 5, 1929, to Gilbert Urcel Bogle and Lulu Ann Bogle (Landers), in Moulton, IA. He attended Moulton High School and graduated from there in 1947. Max married Shirley Bogle (Smith) in 1959 and they had four children. Shirley passed away in 1999, and Max married Clara Bogle in 2000.

Max worked for Montgomery Ward for over 40 years as a commissioned salesman and during those years he earned several regional awards for being the top salesman. Max was extremely proud of all four of his children, and spoke fondly of his nine grandchildren, and his 19 great grandchildren.

Max loved fixing things, building things and growing things. He was always busy on a project or working in his garden and yard. Whenever any of the family members would stop over, he would take them down to his garden to show them how well everything was growing.

Max enjoyed traveling back to Moulton to attend class reunions and to see family and friends from his childhood days. He spoke fondly about the family farms he grew up on, but never regretted moving to the “Big City” of Des Moines to raise his family. He enjoyed watching many sports on television, and especially enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. In his later years Max enjoyed telling stories about his childhood and about raising his family, and those times will be missed by those who were privileged to hear them.

Max is survived by his wife, Clara, his son, Stephen Bogle (Denise), granddaughter, Becky Van Houweling (Chad), and grandson, Christopher Bogle (Tara), his son Bruce Bogle (Deb), granddaughter Glynn Bogle, granddaughter Leah Bogle, son, Eric Bogle (Brandy), granddaughter, Krystal Bogle, grandson Joshua Bogle (Morgan), granddaughter, Emily Bogle, daughter, Leona Bogle, granddaughter Megan Most, grandson, Geoffrey Most, daughter-in-law, Amy Drake-Bogle, 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Shirley, and two sisters, Louise Ocker and Gertrude McCullough, and three brothers, Richard Bogle, Leon Bogle and William Bogle.

A visitation for Max will be held at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, IA on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be immediately after the funeral services at Highland Memory Gardens.
